Chateau de Montfrin produces organic olive oils from olives cultivated in the French countryside, nestled between the Languedoc and Provence regions and bordered by the Gard and Rhône rivers. The estate encompasses over 500 acres, divided equally between vineyards for wine production and olive groves along with other agricultural ventures. Over the past two decades, more than 120,000 olive trees representing various cultivars from Provence, Tuscany, Catalonia, and Languedoc have been planted.
Their olive mill, aptly named “The Mill of the Shadows,” serves numerous local farmers and utilizes cutting-edge technology to preserve the integrity and purity of the olive oil while enhancing its sensory qualities. The name Montfrin derives from the Latin “Mons Fremens,” meaning “mountain of wild animals,” a reference to a time when animals sought refuge in the hills from flooding rivers. As founder Jean-René de Fleurieu playfully observes, “Nowadays other ‘animals’ live here; some of them even grow vines and olives.”
